One day, a saint was walking along the bank of a river when he noticed a scorpion struggling in the water, about to drown.
Moved by compassion, the saint reached out to rescue it. But the moment his hand touched the scorpion, it stung him sharply.
Despite the pain, the saint did not retreat. Instead, he gently tried again to lift the scorpion out of the water. Once more, the scorpion stung him.
A passerby, witnessing the scene, shouted,“Why are you trying to save that creature? It keeps stinging you! Let it drown!”
The saint looked up, calm and unwavering, and replied:“It is the scorpion’s nature to sting. And it is my nature to help. Why should I give up my nature simply because it chooses not to change its own?”
