There once was a man who longed to find happiness. He believed it was hidden somewhere far away—perhaps in a distant land, a great achievement, or some treasure yet to be discovered.
So, he packed his belongings and set off on a long journey.
After many days of travel, he reached a quiet village nestled near a mountain. There, he met a wise old man known for his deep understanding of life. The traveler pleaded, “Please, tell me where I can find true happiness.”
The wise man smiled and said, “There is a tree in the nearby forest that holds the secret to happiness. Find it, and you will have your answer.”
Hopeful, the traveler rushed into the forest. He searched for hours until he found the tree—but it looked completely ordinary. Disappointed, he returned to the wise man.
“This tree looks like any other,” he said. “There’s nothing special about it.”
“Then cut it open,” the wise man replied.
Puzzled, the man chopped the tree down and split it open. Inside, there was nothing—just plain, unremarkable wood.
Frustrated, he demanded, “What does this mean?”
The wise man gently said,“Happiness is not hidden in exotic places or in things that appear extraordinary. It doesn’t lie in wealth, status, or distant goals. Like this tree, the outside world can seem full of promise, but the true secret of happiness is simple—and it’s already within you.”
He continued,“It is your perception, your gratitude, your inner peace that bring true happiness. Look inward. That is where joy begins.”
The Moral: We often chase happiness, thinking it lives somewhere outside of us. But happiness isn’t a place, a possession, or a goal. It is a state of being—a way of seeing the world. When we stop seeking and start being, we discover what was there all along:Happiness lives within.
