A professor stood before his class, holding a large, empty glass jar.
Without saying a word, he carefully placed several large rocks into the jar until no more would fit.He turned to his students and asked,“Is the jar full?”
They nodded. “Yes.”
The professor then picked up a container of small pebbles and slowly poured them into the jar. He gently shook it, allowing the pebbles to slip into the spaces between the rocks.
Again, he asked,“Is the jar full now?”
The students laughed and agreed, “Yes, now it’s full.”
The professor smiled, then reached for a bag of sand. He poured it into the jar, and the sand filled all the remaining gaps between the rocks and pebbles.
“Now,” he said, “I want you to understand something very important.”
The Metaphor
“This jar,” he continued, “represents your life.”
The rocks are the truly important things—your health, your family, your relationships, your dreams. If everything else were lost, and only the rocks remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the things that matter, but not as deeply—your job, your house, your hobbies.
The sand is everything else—the small stuff, the daily distractions, the endless emails and errands.
“If you fill your jar with sand first,” he said, “there’s no room left for the rocks or the pebbles.”
The Lesson
The key to a fulfilling life is prioritization.Start with the rocks—your values, your purpose, the people you love. Then fit in the pebbles. And if there’s time left, sprinkle in the sand.
Don’t let the small stuff crowd out what truly matters.
So ask yourself today:What are the rocks in your life? Are you giving them the time and space they deserve?
Because when we focus on what matters most, everything else tends to find its place.
