There was once a skilled carpenter who had worked faithfully for the same company for many years. One day, he told his employer that he was ready to retire. He wanted to live a simpler life, spend time with his family, and enjoy the fruits of his labor.
His boss was saddened to lose such a dedicated worker, but he made one final request:“Would you build just one last house for me?”
The carpenter reluctantly agreed. But as he started the project, it was clear that his heart wasn’t in it anymore. He used cheap materials, rushed through his tasks, and cut corners at every opportunity. It was far from his best work.
When the house was finished, the employer came to inspect it. Then, to the carpenter’s surprise, he handed him the front door key and said:
“This house is my gift to you. It’s yours.”
The carpenter was stunned. Shame washed over him.Had he known he was building his own home, he would have done everything differently.
The Moral
Each day, we are building the house of our lives.
With every decision, action, and effort, we lay the foundation of our future. What we put in today—whether care or carelessness—will shape the life we live tomorrow.
So, build wisely.Work with integrity.Live as though you are crafting something precious—because you are.
